Protracted Recovery From a Concussion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sex differences among concussed athletes are well documented. Dissimilarities between male and female athletes range from anthropometric, neuromuscular, and strength differences to postconcussion symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions that can influence an individual’s recovery time. Over the past decade, epidemiologic studies have identified a surge in the incidence of sport-related concussions for female athletes as well as an increased rate of injury for female athletes when compared with male athletes in sex-equivalent sports. Female athletes have longer cervical spine segments and may not be as efficient at transmitting impact forces from their head into their torso via their cervical musculature during a concussive event, thus potentially resulting in a higher incidence of injury. Which on-field signs/symptoms predict protracted recovery from sport-related concussion among high school football players?
BACKGROUND There has been increasing attention and understanding of sport-related concussions. Recent studies show that neurocognitive testing and symptom clusters may predict protracted recovery in concussed athletes. On-field signs and symptoms have not been examined empirically as possible predictors of protracted recovery. PURPOSE This study was undertaken to determine which on-field sign...
متن کاملCutoff scores in neurocognitive testing and symptom clusters that predict protracted recovery from concussions in high school athletes.
BACKGROUND Many studies address diagnosing concussions, but few look at predicting prognosis. A previous discriminant function analysis showed that symptom clusters derived from the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale and Immediate Postconcussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing composite scores used together improved predictions of protracted recovery after a sports-related concussion. OBJECTIVE T...
متن کاملSensitivity and specificity of subacute computerized neurocognitive testing and symptom evaluation in predicting outcomes after sports-related concussion.
BACKGROUND Concussions affect an estimated 136 000 high school athletes yearly. Computerized neurocognitive testing has been shown to be appropriately sensitive and specific in diagnosing concussions, but no studies have assessed its utility to predict length of recovery. Determining prognosis during subacute recovery after sports concussion will help clinicians more confidently address return-...
متن کاملRemoval From Play After Concussion and Recovery Time.
OBJECTIVE Despite increases in education and awareness, many athletes continue to play with signs and symptoms of a sport-related concussion (SRC). The impact that continuing to play has on recovery is unknown. This study compared recovery time and related outcomes between athletes who were immediately removed from play and athletes who continued to play with an SRC. METHODS A prospective, re...
متن کاملDoes age play a role in recovery from sports-related concussion? A comparison of high school and collegiate athletes.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate symptoms and neurocognitive recovery patterns after sports-related concussion in high school and college athletes. STUDY DESIGN College athletes (n = 371) and high school athletes (n = 183) underwent baseline neuropsychological evaluation between 1997 and 2000. Individuals who received a concussion during athletic competition (n = 54) underwent serial neuropsychologic ev...
متن کاملEffect of Manual Therapies on Parameters of Post- Concussion Symptoms Recovery : A Systematic Review
Objectives: Post- concussion syndrome (PCS) is a syndrome resulting from an injury to the head leading to loss of consciousness. It includes several symptoms like fatigue, headache, dizziness and difficulty in concentration. Athletes possess a major threat to PCS and its treatment is still considered controversial. The objective of this systematic review is to study the impact of manual therapi...
